Reflection on the Communications One.

I think what I really wanted to do is learn in this course. Communications 1, I must say, was the first course that I have done with more care for what I learnt and experienced through the workshops as opposed to just getting high grades. The tutors have taught me alot about the industries they specialise in, and in all the workshops I have done (Drawing, Fluid thoughts to actions, and Material Modelling), I have learnt to bring meaning to the work I produce, and from that comes an aesthetic quality that superficiality cannot bring.

From fluid thoughts to actions workshop was one which particularly opened me up to thinking. It was a workshop which really questioned what I was doing, why I was doing it, and the message I was trying to convey. As compared to the first workshop I did (Drawing), I was more experimental in this workshop because I was less familiar with the media they used to communicate. I was playing too safe in drawing. I saw the drawing workshop as an opportunity to be exposed to many different architects and presentation styles - teaching me that it wasnt only technical drawing that needed to be presented, but more artistic drawings that are produced and presented to clients.

The final workshop I did (material modelling) allowed for me to play with different materials. prior to the workshop, I was restrained to card, foam core and balsa wood. Experimenting with materials allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of different qualities of the materials of the world - and I have become more appreciative of them as a result.

The most important lesson I learnt in the course as a whole is the importance of communication in architecture. That if you cannot communicate your idea clearly, then no one will understand your intention.
